We are very excited about the support these sales provide for our work in Haiti and the awareness raised by our little ambassadors (the crafts themselves) from Haiti. Both volunteers and professional staff are eager to share their knowledge of Haiti. Shoppers are grateful to find one-of-kind gifts and pleased to know their purchase helps fund orphanages, feeding programs and medical clinics.
New Artisans: In addition to the many artisans that sell their wares to Norwich Mission House and our visitors, we are currently working with several new artisans through whom we have greatly diversified the products we can sell to visitors or send to Haiti's Back Porch. These new artisans or artisan coops include:
- Paula Hypolite: An incredible woman who runs and artisan shop in Jacmel and supports a women's coop producing coffee and chocolate in the mountains above the city.
- Bel Zeb: This cooperative produces beautifully presented natural products like teas, lotions, massage oils, and soaps.
- Rwustik: Another amazing woman producing handmade candles with natural scents from Haiti.
- Fred Bernard: This workshop and store design, dye and sew their own clothing line. Emily is currently looking for shops that can carry these products as distributed from Haiti's Back Porch.
- Zaak: A young artisan who attended the school of arts in Haiti and now produces unique jewelry produced from natural products like seeds and bamboo.
- Wynne Farm: In addition to her environmental education projects, Jane runs an artisan workshop out of her house creating bookmarks, handmade paper, wreaths, pressed flower cards and bamboo easels and book holders.
- Peace Corps Volunteers: There are many Peace Corps Volunteers working with artisan groups. I have tapped into these resources to find great products like embroidered bags, dried fruit, natural oils, and many unique goods.
